History

In 1859, Charles Anderson established a family papermaking business Smith Anderson, at Fettykil Mills in Leslie in The Kingdom of Fife. Today, the Smith Anderson Group operates on six sites throughout the UK and Ireland, employing over 800 people. Now one of the leading European businesses in the paper and packaging industry, the Smith Anderson Group remains family owned.

From the outset, it was no ordinary paper making business. Providing integrated packaging solutions has been an integral part of the business since as early as the 1880’s. During the 1880’s and 1890’s a new purpose built factory was built which incorporated the first automated bag producing machine. The machine was designed by Charles Anderson himself, who was widely recognised as both an entrepreneur and inventor.

Since this date the activities of Smith Anderson Packaging have continued to develop and play a major role in the group’s development. In November 2000 Smith Anderson Packaging Limited was formed when the Group was restructured, it is now one of four subsidiaries, contributing almost 30% of the group turnover.

The range of bags produced has also developed over the years to reflect the market requirements, our portfolio of products now includes Grab Bags, Premium Food Retail Bags, Food Service Bags, Flat and Satchel Bags, Fast Food Bags, Paper Tape Handle Carrier Bags and Twisted Cord Handle Carrier Bags and we can also outsource a full range of printed polythene bags.
